Letter from the Education Director

The Grand is excited to announce our 2019 Summer Intensive programs! We hope to embrace the rich tradition of previous summer intensives while continuing to grow and change to reflect the needs of the young theatre artists in our community.

This year’s intensives are rooted in the principle that to be an exceptional theatre artist, you must first be an exceptional ensemble member. Students across wide age ranges will collaborate and learn the process of building their own show from the ground up. All age groups will have the continued opportunity to work with professional guest artists, learning about a variety of theatrical specialties from technical design to choreography, dramaturgy to puppetry, and beyond! These skills will, in turn, be directly applied to the creation of their pieces, reflecting the growth and personality of the ensemble.

As always, we have an exceptional and growing roster of professional theatre artists who will come together this summer to enrich the experience and enhance the training of our students.

This year we are excited to create two magical pieces for broader age groups of students, reflecting the spirit of ensemble and community theatre that is at the heart of the Grand:

Our Junior Ensemble (grades K-4) will perform a take on the Celtic selkie myth – with a twist! Seal Brother transposes a story of ancient magic and mystery to the shores of Downeast Maine. This production will include classic poetry, devised movement, and a chance to build unique characters!

Our Young Adult Company (Middle & High School) will bring the beloved classic A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle to the stage in the 101st year since the author’s birth. Now a major motion picture, A Wrinkle in Time is at once a thrilling science fiction adventure and deep exploration of love, friendship, and loyalty. Students in this production will collaborate to hone advanced acting and ensemble skills, learn about the art of adaptation from page to stage, and much more!

Both pieces will have full productions and perform for the community on the Grand stage. Come to the Grand this summer to play, learn, and perform with us!

Joyfully,
